What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll have Instrumentl set up with your organization's profile and be using its AI Prospecting Assistant to find funders that genuinely match your programs — with AI-generated explanations of why each funder fits and what gaps might exist between your org and their priorities, so you can make smarter go/no-go decisions in minutes instead of hours.
What you'll need
Go to instrumentl.com and start a free trial or purchase a plan. The onboarding wizard will guide you through your organization profile.
Fill in carefully:
What you should see: A completed profile with a "match score" or relevance indicator. Instrumentl will immediately start generating funder recommendations based on your profile.
Troubleshooting: The more specific your program descriptions, the better the AI matching. If you're getting irrelevant recommendations, go back to your program descriptions and add more specific language about your approach and population.
Click Find Grants or Prospect in the navigation. You'll see a search interface with filters for:
Start with a broad search in your primary focus area. Instrumentl will return a list of funders with match scores.
Click on the AI Explanation button next to any funder (the sparkle icon). This is Instrumentl's key differentiator from other databases.
What you should see: A paragraph explaining specifically why this funder matches your organization — "This foundation's stated priority of supporting re-entry employment programs aligns with your Workforce Re-Entry Initiative" — along with any gaps or cautions: "Note: This funder has not historically supported organizations with budgets under $2M."

Go to Settings → Notifications and configure email alerts for upcoming deadlines — Instrumentl can send reminders 60, 30, 14, and 7 days before each deadline.
Click on any funder's profile page. Instrumentl aggregates:
This is your pre-application research brief. Use the 990 grant history to identify organizations similar to yours that have received funding — and consider reaching out to those organizations for a warm introduction to the program officer.
